Re: Stuff (Was: some other stuff)

(...) I have a colleague who wrote a rather good book about the survey of India, where he specifically addressed the issue with respect to the plural of "Surveyor General." According to orthodoxy plural should be "Surveyors General," but he (...) (24 years ago, 22-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Stuff (Was: some other stuff)

(...) The colloquial singular saying is "Roller"; therefore in this case one could possess many Rollers, if one was very affluent. I've never really heard anyone seriously refer to a collection of Rollers as "Rolls-Royce's"; what is perhaps more (...) (24 years ago, 22-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Music while building

Frank, (...) Indeed. (...) Ah, I see. I certainly like my Minidiscs for work and driving. No skip, editable, etc. It is a really neat item. I know some might not like the compression, btu I am not a music major, it is good enough for me (no offense (...) (24 years ago, 22-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Music while building

(...) The problem for me would be that I'd definitely need three (and depending on just how many of my albums are double CDs, I might have to trim to fit in 3, I suspect I'm only about 800 CDs though, I've got about 700 albums). Another hassle (...) (24 years ago, 22-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Stuff (Was: some other stuff)

(...) Sure. I can see the point if you do this and you're gonna use it multiple times *within a single document* (lawyers do it all the time!), and you can even do it using a glossary. What I detest is people who use an acronym *ONCE* and follow it (...) (24 years ago, 21-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Stuff (Was: some other stuff)

(...) What I had meant to say was that Rolls-Royce is the plural of Rolls-Royce (as opposed to Rolls-Royces). I can't recall where I heard/read this (probably from some snooty old guy like Edith Sedgwick's grandfather-- the one who would be (...) (24 years ago, 21-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Stuff (Was: some other stuff)

(...) You raise an interesting etymological point--who determines the "proper" pluralization? We're all well aware of the LEGO/Legos issue; while a manufacturer may wish a certain plural form to be used, what happens if no one uses it (or if enough (...)   Re: Stuff (Was: some other stuff)

(...) The point is to explain the acronym the first time you use it, then just re-use the acronym where it needs to be repeated. It's actually required by the guidelines for government writing in the UK (or was that an Official Secret? Damn, I can (...)   Re: Music while building

To All, (...) Yes, that is correct. I am sure my collection will grow into another one, but hopefully not three! : ) (...) Indeed. Unless of course, you accidently put a LEGO box on top of the keyboard and forgot to unplug it. I have a variety of (...) (24 years ago, 21-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Music while building

(...) I've got a Sony 300, also since about last fall, and like Scott, I've never had significant problems with Sony stuff. The thing that's neat about the 300-changer (not that we need this) is that you can chain up to three of them together, to (...) (24 years ago, 21-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Macross/Robotech toy information

(...) Magnificent. I remember having the Japanese Cyclone model ordered through an outlet, and getting my Alpha fighters at K-B when they were remaindered there... (...) I never managed to find the Betas. I do have the maroon and green Alphas, (...) (24 years ago, 21-Mar-01, to lugnet.space, lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Music while building

(...) Well, I just got mine in September, but it has been running fine so far. It is a Sony, a brand which I have had little trouble with so far. We shall see how long it lasts. It is so convenient, I could buy another one if it does die eventually. (...) (24 years ago, 21-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Music while building

(...) I've thought about getting a big changer for this reason. The problem I have is that my collection is something like 800 CDs. I'm also concerned how long the player will last. I was replacing portable CD players every few years (and right now (...) (24 years ago, 21-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: Music while building

Eric & All, (...) rest (...) Definately, let's see I have aroun 250*60 = 15,000 minutes (250 hours), that would translate into roughly 10 days, if my math is correct (working 8 hours + pushing carts for 5 hours makes for a long day, so my math may (...)   Re: What's in a name?

(...) That's pretty cool, and it ranks as one of the most obscure facts I've learned lately. Are you confident of the spelling? I'm not doubting you (since I have no basis for comparison) but I'd like to look into it a bit further. Thanks for the (...) (24 years ago, 20-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  Re: What's in a name?

(...) I dunno if there's a link to He Who Wrote Jurassic Park, but a kryton (I dunno about the spelling and dictionary.com hasn't offered a non-Krypton alternative) is a device used in the fuse on a nuclear warhead... Cheers, - jsproat (24 years ago, 20-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

  What's in a name?

I haven't given this too much thought, and someone has probably already explored this at length, but here goes. Off the top of my head I can think of three (it was four, but now I can't remember one) SF series in which a lead character was named (...) (24 years ago, 20-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Childhood memories of making all town cars Road Warriors

Chris & All, (...) Cool. It was a rather neat show, I think WGN from Chicago played it until the mid 90's, or something. (...) Hey, no problem. Glad to help, Lord knows I had days like that. (...)
