What do you know about football - coming from the country that lost to Iran • and
got nil points at the World Cup - they only qualified because they've got an
easy group.

That was a silly game, Aus was up 2-0 for just about the entire game, until
some idiot ran onto the field and interrupted the game. All the same - we lost.

Australia is part of the Oceania group, and in the 2002 world cup, oceania has
only been given one spot in the world cup. That is that the 1st placed team in
Ocenaia plays the team that comes 5th in South America, and the winner of that
takes up the final place in the South American division.

So although the Oceania division is easy, getting into the world cup is by no
means just as easy. We weren't lucky enough to be like Iran, They lost three
games or so, and still got into the world cup, we only lost one and missed out
because they don't make a place for Ocenaia in the "world" cup.

Incidentally, Australia does have a good soccer talent pool, all our good
players are playing overseas doing quite well. Quite often these overseas
teams are reluctant to release players for national duties, or (As in the
case of some players), theier EGO boost says "Bah I'm too good to play for
them"...which is a shame really. If a player gets asked for national
representation, then even mildly hesitates, they should never be asked again.

Its for reasons of lack of sponsorship that the national competition is poor,
it's getting better slowly.Soccer is the most popular recreational sport of a
winter with competitions held over weekends on almost any playing field big
enough.

So yeah, just some insight into the soccer scene down under.
