Great challenge, Steve.  I wish you had asked (or I had seen the quesion)
earlier; my son was at the Huntsville Space & Rocket Center last week and
could have checked there.

I thought it was "on" the LM, not "in" - but I could be wrong.

lessee what I can find...

http://www.hbo.com/apollo/cmp/qtvr/rover.html has a QuickTimeVR picture that
is really cool.

http://www.nasm.edu/galleries/attm/la.a17.3.html has a diagram that may be of
some assistance (click through the images, then click on the diagram).
http://www.nasm.edu/galleries/attm/la.a17.5.html has a pic of it actually
folded.

And you were right - "in".

"As shown in this training exercise, the LRV was stored in a compartment on
the descent stage of the lunar module. The wheels folded under the chassis for
storage. Once on the Moon and after releasing storage restraints, astronauts
unfolded the rear section and lowered it to the surface. After the front
section was similarly prepared, the astronauts released the LRV from the Lunar
Module. The seats were then unfolded and two antennae, the communications
unit, and the television camera were attached to the vehicle. After the
astronauts loaded their lunar tools on the rear, they were ready to begin
operations."

According to some outdated pages, nasm has some real detailed info, but it's
moved or been removed in the past year or two :-(

http://images.jsc.nasa.gov/iams/html/pao/as15.htm (and as16.htm and as17.htm)
have lots of pix - none that I can find of the actual storage or unfolding
unfortionately.

Ohh! Ohh!  http://cass.jsc.nasa.gov/expmoon/Apollo15/A15_Surface_EVA1.html
has - oh - the same "artist's conception" of the unloading.  *sigh*

Good Grief, Charlie Brown - *somebody* has to have taken pictures of the real
thing!

(...) Neil, do you mean to tell me that we came over 238,000 miles, and you forgot to bring the *film*?!? Great! After I eat this ravioli, I'm gonna tell Mission Control just what I think of you! ...erm, Neil, where's the can opener? ;-) Cheers, - (...) (25 years ago, 15-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

In case you didn't see, Axel provided a link to a QuickTime movie record of the unfolding of the LRV during Apollo 15. www.hq.nasa.gov/offi...lrvdep.mov It looks like the LRV was both "in" and "on". Half of the rover's bottom seems to be used as the (...) (25 years ago, 17-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Does anyone have a pointer to a website with details of *how* the Lunar Rover folded (and was stowed in the LM)? I did some preliminary searching, and found some great Apollo information (that I intend to go back to and reread in depth), but only (...) (25 years ago, 15-Feb-00, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)
