Well, I wouldn't debate U-M's leftist slant, but I've seen some pretty far-right
Ann Arborites around. I keep remembering Fred Zinn's old cartoon from the
Michigan Daily, with the "Recognizing Ann Arbor Wildlife #54: Native Ann
Arborite" which was a pickup truck coming head-on, gun rack in the rear window
and cowcatcher on the front...
And doesn't Michigan's "Berkeley" have only two "e"s? (Missing that middle
one?) It's so small that I always miss it as I go by on 696.

Nah, I'll just tweak you back. Especially since you went to Tech and I went to
Eastern when we were undergrads. ;)

I recall hearing something about this once. I'm sure there were moments when
the idea of "borrowing" chickens was a bit bizarre to the locals. I'm surprised
word didn't spread faster among the farmers. I hadn't heard about the fowl
aftermath.

The true downside of the academic life is that it's not really conducive to
having really long-term long-term relationships (grammatically questionable as
that phrasing is), because I move around so much, go on extended research trips
abroad, and the like. However, every university I've attended is significantly
out of balance demographically--in favor of women, mostly 18-25. This was good
until I began *teaching*, when it became necessary to maintain some
student-teacher distance. Just as the money in the till wasn't mine when I
worked retail....you can finish that analogy yourselves.
However, had I gotten married when I'd planned, I would have ended up in
Alpena. That was a close one, whew! (Or perhaps "brrr?")
