The origin of the word noel or the name "Father Noel?" The word itself is
middle English, drawn from the Latin "natalis" or "to be born."

Yep, that's who the fat man supposedly is...patron saint of children and seamen,
I think--supposedly he was clergy in Anatolia during late Roman/Byzantine times,
so that would definitely explain why churches there would identify with him as a
saint.
