I'm one of the more prolific hackers (at least, I think I am...)
First off...on tubing...it is SUPPOSED to be cut
(I use 1/8" Vinal tubing, for longer runs...much cheaper than the Lego tubing)
Painting-some very specific parts. I did the wheel rims on some of my custom
sets (I feel justified, because this is a easy mod, and one Lego could do on
its own if they wanted too...or provide us with stickers to do so)
I've also done some pieces mostly when I was younger (such as the upside down
monitors from space, and suchlike) Quite often, we used a piece of paper, and
taped the paper to the bricks. I still have a bunch of bricks done in this
manor.
Cutting wire (9V and 4.5) 4.5V is another thing like tubing, it was availabe
in a manor that forces cutting. 9V, I have made a bunch of special pieces
(mostly train track pieces) to get around the missing Lego bits (insulated
sections, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 track lengths, different point setup (all curved).
These are more for the electrical prospective than from the purely lego
prospective. I can understand Lego's reluctance to introduce some of the
pieces that I have made myself (such as live rail points-I have one on the
railway right now, and insulated track sections (4 on the railway).
(sign me inpure, and _liking_ it :)
