Ok, I've slept on it and am less angry than I was last night.  Apologies for
getting personal with the "parasite" comment, but I was annoyed as you
clearly expected that I would be.

Even in your own words, you "took a liberty" and that is the basis of my
grievance.  If you were to walk in to a public auction close to the end of
bidding and shout "hey folks, come on over the road to my shop, I've got one
cheaper" the buyers would be happy, the seller and auctioneer would be
justifiably miffed.  Clearly, support for your action will come from a
buyers perspective.  From a sellers perspective, if this type of thing is
actively encouraged, or at least not discouraged, then the whole process of
an auction is undermined and sellers will end up going over to Ebay to
prevent the practice which *is* bad news for the community.

In fact, to take your technique to it's ultimate conclusion, here is the
scenario as I see it:

I am a buyer and am interested in purchasing a BSB say...
I post a message to the group thus:

Wanted - unopened BSB willing to pay $450
decrements in $25 units min

Current offer $300 + 3 firing cannons (seller 4)
Previous offer $300 (seller 3)
Previous offer $325 (seller 4)
Previous offer $350 (seller 3)
Previous offer $400 (seller 2)
Previous offer $450 (seller 1)

I'm sure you can see the point that I'm making - if the practice isn't
discouraged, then where does it stop?

Re your comment about keeping the price artificially high - how can the
price be "artificial" ?  Do the bidders not exist?  Does the opposite not
apply - that buy undercutting the high bid, you are forcing the price to be
artificially low?

Cheers

Hello Lugnet auction participants:

As you might have noticed, I took the liberty of responding to
this Lugnet auction thread with an offer to sell at a lesser price.
(The thread was "Mini Auction - 6273 - Rock Island Refuge")
I knew this might annoy the auctioneer, but I didn't think
it was unethical or discourteous, just competitive.
What do you all think?

Steve Scott wrote:

A.  If you want to sell something start your own thread.
B.  If you must butt-in on mine, at least have the courtesy to wait until • my
auction has closed.

My current position is that there are multiple sellers and buyers
in Lugnet, that all threads are available to all, and that
artificially keeping the price high for one seller by waiting
for the auction to finish is worse for the community than
is bringing out the set when the price exceeds my sell price.

However, I am willing to change my opinion if there
is a consensus here that what I have done is unethical.

Thank you for your comments,
