Do it here among friends. :-) That's what we're here for.

I read your post but not all the replies. I'll try to be brief but know this, I
wish more christians were like you (and Frank).

In fact, legislating morality goes against the concept of free agency, which
is core to our beliefs.  As per the gospel, the best you can do is instruct
and give example, and let people make their own decisions; everyone will get
their reckoning eventually.

Would that the Christian Reformed(1) church (or what seems like a majority of
its members) would take a page from that play book. Bravo. The library filter
proposal in Holland MI lost by a pretty thin margin, which should give you some
sense of the climate around here. As I've said before, were I to choose to be a
Christian, and were I basing my choice on level of tolerance and approach to
life (which are the right criteria), I'd go Mormon, despite your nutty books
:-) (2)

I haven't read the slashdot thread at all, or your post closely, so I may be
speaking out of turn. But, seems to me that BYU can do whatever they want about
approving or disapproving housing, as long as they don't have the force of law
behind them. (and as long as they don't get state/fed funding... do they??? If
so, then <sigh>... never mind)

Bravo to you for choosing to market your rental properties (which indeed are a
*great* retirement scheme, we have one so far and want more) to those that
choose not to go to BYU, and Bravo to BYU for asking that people that choose to
go to BYU voluntarily adhere to a code of BYU's choosing.

None of that has anything to do with religious fanaticism which shows that
slashdot can get it wrong. Remember, the Powers That Be at slashdot live in
Holland MI and are probably a bit less tolerant of religion than average 20
something geeks who didn't grow up in such a warped religious climate.

Can you do LDS and SBSPS at the same time? :-)

1 - which is neither very christian nor very reformed... moss bound is more
like it.

2 - that's praise... although it may be hard to recognise as such.

(...) Well, BYU is a private school. But like any big school they get all kinds of financial kickbacks from the state and the city of Provo, as well as outright funding. Arg. I gotta vent. Slashdot is carrying an article (1) on how the Utah legislature is trying to enfore internet filtering in public libraries. Somehow, this topic has become a Mormon-bashing extravaganza. I was going to post there, but I suspect (...) (24 years ago, 1-Mar-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
