Freedom of speech is a worthy thing indeed, but what about when it violates
copyright?

It's all a balancing act -- the issue of "your rights end where my nose
starts" writ large. Generally, it's been acknowledged that certain
intellectual property rights are important enough to, in certain cases and
circumstances, supercede free-speech rights. One can certainly imagine a
society in which copyright is considered extremely weak compared to the
right of speech; the United States and western culture in general aren't
that way. And from a pragmatic standpoint, that seems to work pretty well.
It encourages a profit-driven incentive to spread one's thoughts and
original concepts to others.

How you feel about the morality and ethics of this issue depend a lot on
which rights you hold most dear. The legal situation depicts the standards
we as a country and culture have evolved over time.
