You are seeing Judges that aren't up on what Lego has brought out as
stock models, that's where the problem comes in... they probably don't
know that what the kids did wasn't their own creation made from the
Lego... it's sad to see that stock Lego sets of these last years could
win anything either :(  I'm still waiting for the day that Lego gets
permission from Ed "Boxer" Jones to create a few sets of stuff he's
built, I'd buy 2 or 3 at least of those for parts!!! Ed, talk them into
it!!!! tell them next time they want to use your Castle in something,
that they need to bring out better castle sets first!!!! Put some
conditions on their using your great creations!! We'll back you like
Lucas has done with the Star Wars sets!!

Actually, a blue, black, and gray castle w/various themed figures won the blue
ribbon. Moreover, how could they not know. COMMERCIALS FOR THE STAR WARS
(Classic) COLLECTION AND THE ROCK RAIDERS COLLECTION HAVE BEEN RUNNING ON TV
FOR THE PAST WEEK! ARTS & CRAFTS JUDGING IS USUALLY ON THE SECOND FRIDAY OF THE
FAIR (2 days ago).

Next year, I'd like to see real AFOLs (like myself) or ingenuitive kids come
out there with original ideas and lambast anyone who thinks of putting a
factory-made set up for display. After that, they should beat "TLG's agents"
fair-and-square.

Headmasters-inspired Lego creations.)

I went to the Mid-South Fair in Memphis. In the arts & crafts pavillion,
they have a section where people (mostly kids) make art out of toys.
(Most of the case was Legos.) What irked me so much was that some of the
sets receiving ribbons and prizes were built EXACTLY as they were in the
SAHS catalog. (the new Town Jr. police set, the RES-Q HQ set, the X-Wing
Fighter, Anakin's Podracer, the Insectoid vehicle with the grasshopper
springed legs, and several Rock Raiders sets.) Among these, The X-Wing,
RES-Q Headquarters, and the Grasshoppery Insectoid thing got white
ribbons! Is there no crime for not having originality?

(My H:Masters stuff would have moondusted all of those items if I knew
that there was such a category.)

(...) I haven't seen a LEGO commercial in years. I don't watch TV at the right time, I guess. Even so, in any competition involving construction toys, the judges should have some knowledge of what the commercial offerings are. If there was at least (...)
