Very likely, yes.

Journalists are known to edit interviews and such. The problem becomes one of who owns the forum versus misrepresenting someone’s views. I’d say that it might be actionable if someone’s views are savagely distorted and have the tendency to defame. And I don’t mean plain old name calling, or interpretting direct quotes -- I am talking about heavily editing or rewriting such quotes. It could get pretty weird.

I read a “Misanthropic Bitch” article once in which she wrote an article for the school paper--the paper’s editor edited her article to the point where it stated the opposite of her intent. Maybe I’ll try to dig it up.

Ah, but that’s different. If the material is published externally and editing causes it to seriously misrepresent what was said by another, that’s certainly actionable... it’s somewhere in the slander/libel/defamation of character area depending on circumstances.

relatedly, the 1st allows me to slander you or libel you, (false statements of alleged fact being libel, character smears being slander) on my own nickel, but it in and of itself provides no shield for me if you turn around and sue me for damages I caused.

I read that strip too!!! ... but there’s only one section of the forums I view much of (and I ain’t there for the articles, nudge nudge, wink wink... ryu knows how to pick his pictures) so I missed that particular incident. I found it interesting that Sohmer was able to successfully transition to a new artist who has a fairly radically different drawing style but still maintain the feel of the strip.

Sometime I might post the webcomics I follow...
