Well, there are two separate but interrelated issues.
- Why do more boys play with LEGO toys than girls?
- Why do more men play with LEGO toys than women?
Some thoughts to contribute towards an answer:
- LEGO is a "construction toy". There seems to be a gender bias towards
males for construction. This is at least in part a bias promoted by
parents.
- The two largest contributors to the growth of the AFOL hobby are
Mindstorms and Star Wars. Mindstorms being an engineering toy obviously
is going to affect the bias based on the bias of engineering towards
men. Star Wars is a little less clear, though I almost feel there are
more male fans of Star Wars. Then there's the fact that Star Wars toys
promote war play which is biased towards males.
- Of course there have been historic biases against women artists and
such. Of course quilting, knitting, sewing, etc. being all "domestic"
crafts have a bias towards women.
- I think there is a bias towards physical play for boys.
I think it is going to take a LONG time before gender bias disappears,
and it will be difficult to even resolve which gender differences are a
result of bias and which are a result of hardwired differences (for
example, I expect that women will always have a greater attachment to
their offspring simply because they have a greater investment in them).

| As I roam through the vast halls of this community that is Lugnet, I am continually struck with the fact that males members and participants tend to out number females by a very high margin. This is also reflected in the ratio of people that in our (...) (21 years ago, 6-Feb-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
