One issue that some will have is that his derivation of *why* people have
the rights they do is pretty weak. I know it always comes up here if you
just more or less take it as an assumption. I think people DO have these
rights but have not yet been able to satisfactorily demonstrate it.

Well, every argument can be beaten down to some foundational principle that
is a mere assertion that some may not agree with.  I am not sure I have ever
seen a philosophical argument that didn't ultimately break down that way.
I'd be well pleased to be contradicted here -- it would be like learning
some ultimate "truth" not otherwise available.

And, yeah -- Bastiat's creator driven stuff is a little annoying.  Than
again, Jefferson states similar things and I am not sure he actually
believed in god at all!  Invoking god is just a good rhetorical trick, but a
trick nonetheless.  "By the will of Zeus, I command thee..."

Sometimes you have to be pragmatic about certain things, and just accept
some philosophical assertions because there is utility to doing so.

Tell ya what though -- would everyone doubting the asserted foundational
principles of "life, liberty, and property" please send me ALL of their
lego.  I am sure I can put it to better use -- and if you don't want to
"own" it, I will!

(...) I know this was a throw-away comment, but... One could be against the notion of ownership and still be reasonable in owning stuff under our current system. I know someone who thinks that we should accept that we are at best stewards of (...) (23 years ago, 24-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
