Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

(...) I don't. The people for whom I vote, lose. What can I do? I am completely at the mercy of the majority. (...) How do you define this, and what makes you think so? Chris (23 years ago, 20-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

(...) Further, the system has been deliberately skewed (on many levels) to ensure that the current two parties are virtually unseatable, so the hope for real change at the ballot box is slim. Fortunately, the two parties we are stuck with tend to (...) (23 years ago, 20-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

(...) What is you proposed solution on this? Smaller parties in the UK back PR as they hope it will benefit them? Is that on the agenda in the USA? Scott A (...) (23 years ago, 20-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

(...) The solution that I would like to see for the US is undistricting. If we were electing the top n representitives instead of the top one from n districts, then small parties would get at least some representation. When that happened, I expect (...)   Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

(...) Good idea. The tiny majority in your last election is similar to what kept the Tory government hanging on to power by their fingernails for a while over here. With only 40% of the vote, they still managed to keep just over 50% of the seats in (...) (23 years ago, 20-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

(...) Maybe it's not a very solid argument, since I don't think any one individual is likely to fall into both camps. But, from what we see of your election campaigns it's all about who can throw the most money around, and behind the scenes offer (...) (23 years ago, 20-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

Could you clarify this paragraph for me, please? (...) This confused me. If the government currently is oppressive, but not bad enough to actually rebel against, why would I want to give up my arms now? I may well be working for political change, (...)   Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

(...) But is the flip side not that small parties end up with too much power - the tail starts wagging the dog? I suppose the Israeli system of election is the best example of this: (URL) A (...) (23 years ago, 24-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) were (...) happened, (...) small conservative party is exercising more than it's share of control. Presumably the people back them in rough relation to their voting power. What I am troubled by, both in our system and the other ones with many (...) (23 years ago, 24-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: The position of authority (was: Handgun Death Rate)

(...) I agree with your point on parties. I decided a few years ago that I would never join a party again as it was too much of a compromise. Likewise I try not to pigeonhole myself as being assigned to any particular political ideology. That way, I (...) (23 years ago, 25-Jul-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
