On Thu, 3 Jun 1999 00:05:56 GMT, Larry Pieniazek uttered the following
profundities...

if you're keen on reading about anarcho-capitalistic (franchised out
government) societies, read Across Realtime by Vernor Vinge. Good story
in its own right, and plays with the idea nicely.

I shall perhaps look that up. One example which came to mind was
the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson.

Me, I'd rather debate stuff like whether the (E1 SW) Trade Federation
were actually capitalist or not (they aren't), or how to go about
privatizing the Tennesee Valley Authority. (sell it)

From the book and film, don't see enough evidence to determine
one way or the other.

I am constantly surprised to learn how many things in the US
are actually owned by the government! In the 80's, the UK
government sold off pretty much anything and everything that
could be sold, and cheaply. An increasing number of services
are also put out to tender, with varying degrees of success.

Like the US, the Post Office is still government owned, much
to the consternation of many. But it is a cash cow, and
as such supplements the government's purse. Being government-
owned though, limits it competitively. They used to run
the 'phone company, too. It would have placed them in a
perfect position to take advantage of the internet boom.

Govermental theory is all screwy. And I can live just fine in a
minimalist government society even if they have a territorial power
monopoly.

Hmmm. We have a very top-heavy civil service, and despite
governmental policy, etc. are the ones that really run the
country. (Regardless of what government is around, it seems the
civil servants actually determine how the money is spent, the
gov't just provides the cash). I imagine many of the problems
currently experienced here would be eliminated if private
industry took it over. Too many liberals and semi-commmunists
in positions that matter.
