How do you feel about maternity leave?

This should really be in a separate thread, but...

I dunno-- it may still be relevant... see below...

Women usually CHOOSE to get pregnant.  I don't think they should get PAID
time off for a medical condition they CHOSE to have.

Yes, I CHOSE to get pregnant - twice.  I have an angelic son, and a
beautiful baby daughter.  I also discussed with my husband -before we were
married- how *not* to get pregnant when we were finished with that phase of
our lives.  I can't take the pill for reasons given below.

So, if they DON'T choose it, is it sexist/unfair to give women paid time
off? Likewise, couldn't a woman choose to take the pill to at least lessen
the effects of PMS?

I was just reading until this little comment happened.

Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease, guys.

Yes, PMS sucks, and I don't suffer from it like some women I know;  but, if
you happen to have certain medical conditions, the Pill can be deadly.  I
can *not* take the pill - it increases the clotting factor in the blood to a
level that is dangerous for me, and many women don't even know that this is
a possibility.   Stroke, heart attack, pulmonary emoblism - take your pick
of gory side-effects from the wonder-drug of the 20th century.

<snip>
I also don't think parents should get paid Flex Time while denying it to
adults without children.  Again, they CHOSE to have kids, and
rewarding them for it/punishing others for NOT having kids just isn't right.

The family Medical leave act allows for parents of new babies, newly adopted
children and caregivers of elderly family members.  Most people wouldn't
CHOSE to have their parents deteriorate to the point that they need
full-time care, either, but it happens and allowances need to be made.  This
is what makes us human.

And again, if they didn't choose to have kids? But I think I agree with
you-- when your kids affect your work performance, your benefits decrease in
some manner or another, in relation to the decrease in work performance. In
a "fair" world.

Whoever told you life is fair?  It's not, let's get on with it, and let's go
get some ice-cream.  I'm too warm and I'm cranky.

(and I can virtually Guarantee you that if the gubmint
stepped in, they'd handle it wrong).

AMEN

On a side note, all we really need is more women doctors and researchers
(because men simply can't relate) so that they can work on PMS side effects
to find a good battery of drugs to handle the various problems.  There are
some good ones out there, but none are anywhere near perfect.

Agreed-- but who wouldn't? :)

Oh, and on the record, yes, the original question was sexist.  I tend to
believe though, that everything in life is skewed toward one side or the
other of a given spectrum.  Like I said, life's not fair, and you have to
find your niche where the situation and the like are biased in your favor.

Where can I get that ice cream? Before it melts...
