I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon offered you some form of restitution if
you complain loud enough, perhaps a coupon code for your next order. I have
always had great service from Amazon and ordered 4 of the UCS Tie Fighter
sets. All 4 arrived in separate, well packed boxes. I don't think the
plastic bags are part of their normal shipping procedures. You have a very
ligitimate gripe and Amazon needs to hear about it loud and clear. If they
don't offer some form of restitution I'd return the sets in the same plastic
bags they sent them to you in. They'll be double torchured by the time they
get there and totally unresellable. Maybe then they'll see how rediculous
that shipping practice is.
