Actually I bet the AP story was legit, and after it ran the Target
security folks realized they finally had a good picture of him. I bet
previously he was good at avoiding giving the Target security cameras
a good look at his face, and Target knew someone was ripping them off
but not who. After that AP photographer took that picture and the
story ran, they compared it with the records of purchases at that
store and realized he was the guy. So then they knew who to watch
for, and busted him shortly afterward. I think that scenario is more
likely than the one you describe.

Almost right. :-) Target probably gave the AP photographer permission to take photos for a holiday story with the stipulation that they get to prescreen the photos (and possibly keep copies) before giving the approval to run them. And *that* (...) (19 years ago, 1-Dec-05, to lugnet.market.shopping)
