The first time I went to the Woodfield store Ondrew and Tim Courtney helped
me pack a couple cups. I think I bought 13 cups or so on that visit and
while I was reluctant to pack them, Ondrew showed me how much more you can
get in the cup by doing so. All the cups had to be filled and their lids
reasonably secured. The lids were then taped on to make sure they stayed
on.
Ondrew is a far more patient man than I though. I think I packed two cups
and decided that was enough for me. I then filled the rest of them to the
best of my ability using the shake and settle method. It takes a loooong
time to pack a cup correctly and for me, it was a time vs. money deicison
while I was there.
On subsequent visits where I have only bought one or two cups, I have taken
the time to pack them a little better but certainly not optimally. I like
the idea of packing one and then being able to buy multiple copies of that
cup without having to go through the effort to pack it but I think that
would be a logistical challenge. You can fill up the "air" with 1x1 trans
yellow tiles or some other small elemement - how do you factor that in?
I can see taking the time to pack one or two cups, particularly if you have
the time to do so.
If you are going to buy a large number of cups and will then be transporting
your loot with you as baggage, I would recommend taking a supply of gallon
zip lock bags with you. The plastic cups themselves take a lot of space.
After leaving the store I purchased a box of zip lock bags and picked up an
empty copy paper box from our office. I emptied all of the cups into zip
lock bags and then packed them in the copy paper box. I got all 13 (it may
have been more now that I think about it) in the box and was able to keep a
few of the LEGO PaB cups as well. The rest of the cups went in the trash as
I had no way to get them home and I'm not sure what I'd do with them if I
did.
Hope that helps.
Mike
