In lugnet.loc.uk, Mark Palmer writes:

Chloe says thanks to those who donated silver bricks for her pyramid
project, which is now 32 bricks high, 64x64 square. Answers on a • postcard
please for how many 2x4s are needed, excluding internal bracing, for • such a
structure.

560

Mark (whoose pyramid is only ~20 bricks high with no bracing)

I believe the formula you should be using is h*(h-1) 2x4s plus 1 2x2 where h
is the height of the pyramid in bricks so the answer for a 32 high is 992.
(Huw: Please imagine this message is a postcard!)

(...) h (...) Excellent, thanks Phil. I did what turns out to be a similar calculation, and got just over 1000, but I think yours is more mathematically correct. Huw (22 years ago, 21-Aug-02, to lugnet.loc.uk)
