It really depends on the bank and your credit.  I have two accounts at
different banks.  At Canada Trust, they want to hold US cheques for 30
business days -- that's nearly a month and a half when you factor in
weekends and the odd holiday.  This even goes for my monthly paycheque
(which comes from the US).  And I've had that account for about six years.
The Royal Bank, on the other hand, cashes these cheques immediately and
without question, and my account has only been there for a little more than
a year.

Sometimes, a bank might cash a cheque immediately if you have a credit card
there (so they can freeze that amount of credit on your card "in case").

Also, it's proper etiquette to say "all cheques must clear" on the auction
page if a seller plans on pursuing this policy.  Most good sellers will
still send immediately if they see you have good feedback.

My personal experience is that cash is always easiest.  I guess someone
who's had their money stolen wouldn't agree, but it seems fairly rare.

Hi ,
I hope it's the right place for this question, if it's not please excuse • me.
I won an auction at ebay and sent the seller (a Canadian seller) a US bank
cheque.
A while has passed and to my (3) inquiries he claimed he didn't get the • cheque.
After I got a reception notice through the mail he recalled getting the • cheque,
but claimed a US cheque can take 21 days to clear..
He finally sent me the LEGO set (or at least he wrote me he did - I didn't • get
it yet) 21 days after he received the cheque.

Is 21 days clearing period for a US cheque possible or did he just stall • for
time?
(I'm wondering about the feedback I should leave him).
Any reply will be appreciated,
David
