All of my Lego was stored in 2 and 5 litre plastic ice cream containers when I was
younger.
I started with a bucket for each colour, until it became hard to find pieces
amongst the black elements. I still use a few for holding minifigs, plants,
pnuematics and 16 length technic beams.

They stack well when 1/2 - 3/4 full, I find. Just don't try and carry a stack as
long as your arms over unknown terrain, and trip. Can get a little messy if none
of the containers have lids!
