Just on that: does anyone know if Lego ever plan on bringing the RBR into
the shops?

Well, if you believe what the Lego Direct staff say, it's a question of
whether shops want to stock it rather than whether Lego want to do it. There
are some examples of sets previously only available through S@H being sold
through some retailers (mostly in the USA), but typically not retail on a
massive scale.

However, I think the situation is probably a little bit more complex than
that. It's generally believed that production runs for S@H "exclusives" are
much smaller than those for worldwide retail distribution. Having done a
smaller production run in the first place, it would obviously then be
difficult to supply a larger number of retail stores from that production
run. So I can't imagine that the Lego salesmen that handle the big retailers
are likely to bother trying to get them to stock a set that's not available
in sufficient quantity. So there is something of a Catch-22 involved. I
suspect if a set sold like hotcakes on S@H, then this might be used as a
justification to do a much larger production run with a view to worldwide
retail distribution.

Here in Oz, there seems to be an additional hurdle to getting anything
retail: Lego Australia. Local retailers are supplied by Lego Australia, who
choose which sets get imported. So, first Lego has to decide to sell a set
to retailers, Lego Australia has to decide to import it, and local retailers
have to decide to stock it. Given all of that, I would not hold my breath on
finding an RBR on the shelf in your local Target.

Actually, even if the RBR was being imported into Australia, only a few
retailers would carry it as it is over the "price point" for many retailers.
I doubt you would see it in Target locally for that reason alone. Here in
Brisbane, the expensive sets usually only show up in TRU and Myer Queen
Street (except for robotics/computer-related sets that also turn up at Dick
Smith).

So, if you want an RBR, I think you want to join our next S@H order rather
than hope to get it retail in Brisbane.

Kerry

(...) I'd better start saving my pennies then. How much longer is it likely to be available do you think? (22 years ago, 13-Aug-02, to lugnet.loc.au)
