Well, it's all over now... everything packed up, people on their way home.
DAY ONE
The gathering began noonish on Saturday, where we (Michael, Kerry, Paul, Ross,
Teunis, James & I) met at Toys-R-Us in Parramatta. We managed to spend about an
hour in front of the TRU Lego (with distractions from Megablox and Home Depot
Clones) discussing Lego, and minutely analysing sets.
Nothing was particularly cheap or tempting, so no one bought anything there!
After a quick lunch, we checked out Grace Brothers (which people thought was
eerily similar to Myer... and where Kerry was lucky enough to score a half price
Duplo house) and K-Mart, before heading off to the ferry wharf.
While waiting for the ferry, we were able to see a jumping crane in action -
although there was a strong argument that it should have been a stepping crane.
The ferry trip was great, although a few of the interstaters found it to be a
bit on the cool side. Paul saw some very cool looking boats (ferries with
spoilers! A floating restaurant), and we all got some great views of the city as
we headed down the river.
After arriving at Circular Quay, we headed up to the city proper, and spent a
while in GB's toy department there while we waited for Beth (my NLS) to arrive.
From there we headed to the Queen Victoria Building (QVB), where we admired the
architecture, the animated clock, and the replica crown jewels. Then it was off
on a short monorail trip, then a short walk to the Star City Casino.
At the Casino we met up with Robert, Emma, Cade, Trav and Heath. The food made
up for in quantity what it might have lacked in quality. We talked mostly about
LEGO (and miscellaneous geeky subjects).
DAY TWO
I arrived at the venue with my car laden with surplus doors (destined to see use
as tables), and a fair quantity of LEGO, at around 10:15. We set up tables and
people - and MOCs - steadily appeared.
I didn't take photos, but several others did - which will appear on Brickshelf
in due course. There were some very impressive MOCs, the biggest (and arguably
the *most* impressive) was Pete White's tower - although it didn't arrive till
fairly late in the day - which seemed engineered to just fit into the room.
Kerry's Breakfast Creek Hotel (where I have dined with Kerry and her husband)
was another standout, as were Paul's spaceships (with lights, and a staggering
degree of detail)... but there was lots of good stuff.
Michael's Australia map is also worth mentioning. We considered briefly putting
1x1 rounds on it to show our homes, but we weren't spread out from the three
centres much...
There was some ABS and cash changing hands too, and if one is liquidating a
collection, a Bricksmeet seems like a good place to do it.
James organised a MOC competition, the building competition, and the Brikwars,
so I'll leave him to advise the details - except to note that my bushfire
diorama (complete with my Elvis helitanker) scored a prize (which I think was
either for 'Extreme Australia' or 'Best Diorama').
We began winding down and starting to pack up at about 5:30, and I got home
around 6:30 - with a lot more LEGO than I started the day, and some fairly
serious (though now repaired) rigging damage to the Misérable.
The door/tables are now in storage, until the next application is found for
them.
I hope everyone had an enjoyable time, and a safe trip home.
Cheers
Richie Dulin
