I'm afraid I don't quite agree.

I would argue that all of the following are examples of marketing • messages:

I don't think this is marketing. This is exactly why we like TLC here: to
know about upcoming releases before they're all over the media.

Definitely no marketing. This is TLC giving an answer to questions/rumours
posted in the forum.

Again, this is what we asked for. We wanted input, and TLC is announcing
they're going to give us some input. This is not marketing, but part of the
dialogue they're here for.

http://news.lugnet.com/lego/announce/?n=48 • I agree with you here. These three are simple clear marketing messages.
http://news.lugnet.com/lego/direct/?n=4550 • This is similar to the third one.

(Which isn't to say that it's abuse in any way.  I think it's fine.)
Yep, I think you're right there. Looking at these messages and the group
they're in I'd say 'announce'  should be for the marketing messages like the
three you mentioned above (two of which were in 'direct') and 'direct'
should be for the direct dialogue with Lego. Which doesn't mean they should
be restricted to this newsgroup if they want to react/response.

Let's just be clear that LEGO *is* indeed here to do direct-to-consumer
_marketing_ and sales research, among other things.  Make no mistake about • it.
They're a company.  A smart company.
And we're a smart enough bunch of adults to handle their marketing
techniques....
