But containers aren't the same width as the cars.  The containers go
in drop well cars so the cars have to be wider than the containers.

Yes, they are a bit wider, that is true. But the extra width can be as
little as 4 inches a side (in fact on some spine cars it's 0) which in a
total width of 10 feet is less than LEGO resolution. That's not even a
plate on its side, much less a brick width.

I made a more scaled container awhile back. check out
http://members.xoom.com/legotrains/  I have since changed the car that carrys
the container, to a shared bogie unit. With 4 containers long stacked two
containers high. Pictures to come soon I hope.
