As the snow falls silently by my window, and my children are outside building an
"awesome" snow fort, I decided to share my simple little Lego plan with friends
I have met through this hobby.

Both of my boys each got me one copy of the Hockey Championship Challenge (3578)
for my birthday. I have been holding off opening them because we had a little
idea.

Since, the day before Christmas (for those that celebrate it) is one of the
longest days of the years, for kids, and kids at heart. Our plan, is somewhere
between decorating the gingerbread house, going sledding, and dropping off our
secret santa surprises... we will take some time to combine both sets so we can
have the "regulation" number of players on the ice.

I have been looking forward to this build because it just pure and simple fun
family,  I even went as far as buying extra sticker sheets from BL so when the
rink is ready, I can have a full team of Red Wings, while my sons can have a
full team of Maple Losers.

This is how I picture it.

"Ladies and Gentlemen...... It's HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA!!!!!"
(Stands for the national Anthem)

I have a bit of pre-game jitters, but also I have a good feeling about this,
with the Red Wings all smiling and in perfect form, my prediction is that I will
yell (loud enough for the neighbours to hear)

"Sheeeeeee shooooooots, she scorrrrrrrres!!!!!!!!! many times before the night
has come to an end and all "good" children are in bed.

We start, I drop the puck (yes, in my house, I'm judge, jury and referee).
While one of our favourite Christmas movies play in the background, we set in
for a battle of wills, the triumphs and the agony of defeat.

My youngest films the playoff games while doing the commentary......

"The Dead Wings (I glared a playful warning look while he corrects himself and
says) Red Wings effortlessly take control" ...

"The Loafs... (my oldest son tries the same glare without effect..... Man I love
being the boss, it rules!!)

"The Loafs are making a gallant effort to regain their composure (gee is it the
second period already??)

"They shoot long and carelessly"

(Insert sound FX)
"Oh no.... an icing call"

OOPS... Oh no, what? (I come to my senses, briefly) Icing, oh shoot, ICING?? We
forgot about the gingerbread houses....

"This game has been interrupted for a commercial break, and some serious candy
eating."

Before the night is thru, (due to a kind Yankee friend of mine, who sent me a
copy) the official Lego Stanley Cup set, will be awarded to the team that takes
best in seven. Preferably to the Red Wings, under their ~oh so hopeful and
careful~ leadership. With all the pomp and circumstance we can muster, the
almighty cup will be skated around the rink... and a few cups of eggnog (without
rum for the minors) will be consumed by the fans controlling the figs and
filming.

As a grande finale, (as it is tradition in my house) all the gifts that have
made it under the tree in the last few weeks, from out of town friends, and
special things we bought each other, will be opened.  Underneath the tree is now
left completely bare for the jolly ol' man in red. Just before we read "The
Night Before Christmas, and Little Critters Christmas" we will hang our stocking
and put out the fire. Leaving the cookies, coke, and carrots out for the special
visitors, the children will be rushed off to bed, so the magic can begin.

This is where some people will ask? Aren't your kids teens? Aren't they too old
to believe? This is where I smile, and say, "The season is what you make
it...... you can believe in the magic, or hate every bloody minute of the
commercialism, expectations and family dysfunctions, BUT in my house, if you
don't believe, then Santa wont bother. It doesn't take much for my kids to play
along, and actually get into it. Them seem to enjoy the holidays more then most
of their jaded peers. So yes, Virginia, I still believe.... and I really hope
Santa brings me Lego."

As the night comes to an end, I request politely one final wish to Santa.  To my
friends and family, Lugnet, and to all of the fans that have had the pleasure of
meeting through BL, LUG, Fests etc. Specifically, those of you that influenced
me, challenged me, supported me, or just made me laugh. May the holiday not only
bring you joy, but peace as well, to be content in your chosen path or strive to
find a better path.  May always find the strength you need or find someone that
can lend that strength in times when you can not. May you always receive
pleasure from your creative efforts. May your eyes, as well as your mind be open
enough to seek that silver lining within every foreboding cloud, yet closed
enough to be able to ignore those that can't understand.  Finally, enjoy your
friends and/or family, and please, if you enjoy a cup or two, (or more) of
holiday cheer, drive sober.

Cheers!

The best of the Season!
