Hi!
Has anybody any idea how old this set is?
I didnt find it in any of the 50s and 60s catalogs.
I have it in front of me with this type of box/picture.
From the dots left and right to LEGO I would say its from the late 50s.
Does anybody know for how long this set was produced and if it came with
different box designs?
Thanx for your answers
Ronald
P.S. I found no better group to post then .general.

Ronald,
Well yes I can answer that question...(in greater detail in my upcoming CD).
#271 is the unknown spare parts pack.
#271 Traffic Police Set came into production around 1956. It was produced
until about 1964 and only in continental Europe.
This set shows one thing about old 50s and 60s Lego catalogs (in Europe as
well as North America). They have a lot of anomalies (which means they
are not very accurate). The #271 set has NEVER been seen in any European
Lego catalog. Why? That is a mystery to a lot of old time Lego collectors.
#271 has been produced in the following different Lego spare parts pack box
styles:
1955-56, 1957, 1958-59 (this is the one you have), 1960-62, 1963-65.
#271 is very highly sought after. In mint condition I would value that set
at about $300, maybe $400 for the earlier ones. Recently the #271 box
alone sold for about $100 on EBAY.
There is a slight variation to the #271 boxes (the inner sliding box that
you dont see in Ronalds pictures). Some boxes have the policemen with
white sox, others with black socks. This doesnt affect the value, since
both varieties are rare.
Even though #271 is rare, the traffic police are seen a lot on the box top
of early Lego sets. One example is the continental European #810 Town Plan.
It is shown on the box top, but it is not found inside.
The #238 Building Idea Book (1960-68) shows one of the #271 traffic police
pieces in some of the photos (see the back outside cover of the European
versions of #238). it is not shown on the front/back inside cover where all
Lego parts from the early 60s are displayed.
Perhaps someone can take your image of the #271 pieces and add it to Lugnet,
Peeron and Bricklink (also add an entry for #271).
You are very lucky to have this set Ronald!

Hey Ronald,
I did forget one additional thing about the #271 sets. There was also a #1271
set. This was the same set. From 1955-58 Denmark, Sweden and Norway had their
own numbering system for Lego sets and Lego spare parts packs that had an extra
1 at the beginning of the set number. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium,
Switzerland and Austria had the 3 digit set/pack numbers (ditto for Italy and
France). That is why you will find #310 Esso Station as well as #1310.
Starting in 1958 TLG started to use the central European numbering system (#271,
#310, etc) for all countries.
But the numbers between Northern Europe and Central Europe were not always the
same except for the first digit 1. Most parts packs actually had different
numbers. The following are some examples of Northern Europe/Central Europe
parts pack numbers for 1955-58: #1223/#224 were macaroni bricks, #1247/#231 was
the Esso Station accessories, #1248/#230 were Lego trees/bushes, #1231/#214 were
the 9 classic windows/1 classic door parts packs, etc. Even the 1:87 metal
wheel cars/trucks had this dual numbering. #1257/#257 were the Bedford Delivery
Truck, etc.
My Lego CD will have these all listed in a nice table that cross references
every set and parts pack.
