One thing I'm trying to do is actually get a project built *before* hitting
BrickLink.
I often find myself building something - then I cannot finish it because of
lack of parts. So I go to BrickLink and drop $20 on parts. By the time the
parts arrive, I am working on a new something or other and the original
project does not get built. And the new parts go in the bin.
So, for example, when building Jake's reefer in red - I'm building it using
whatever parts and colors I have. Then at the end I will know what
additional parts I need and exactly how many, etc. So there is a little more
sense of accomplishment knowing that the model is built, but just waiting on
swapping out black slopes for greys, etc.
My next project is recreating Ben's gorgeous April Fools 2000 trains:

That is going to take a lot of planning.
