Over the weekend I spent several enjoyable hours playing with my 4011 Cabin
Cruiser (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/4011).

After the twin hurricanes passed through my part of Appalachia, we had one of
those brilliantly clear and beautiful September days in the mountains that makes
you miss summer, but look forward to fall.

I took my boat out to a small lake and just had fun with it.  I had a reel of
fishing line that I attached to the bow and put a Playmobil motor underneath and
set it off.  It was quite relaxing to "steer" the boat by tugging this way and
that on the fishing line and being exposed to the surface currents of the lake.
On one trip out, my boat made it so far out on the lake that it seemed to stop
moving.  I guess this is an illusion that the further away something is, the
harder it is to see its relative progress.

I was surprised at how fun this activity was.  I don't usually "play" with my
Lego, so this was a pretty new experience to me.  The last time I had a similar
experience was when I used to have 12V trains that I could control with the
remote switches and signal lights.

Anyway, I got me to thinking about a few things.  I think there is actually a
hobby of RC boat enthusiasts.  I don't know anything about it, though.  Anyone
here part of that hobby?  Is it transferrable to Lego boats?  Would that be
desireable?

I can see possibilities for having "games" on the lake with Lego boats.  Races,
obstacle courses, finding treasure (GPS and camera enabled boats - why not) :P

.boats could become the next .trains at Lego shows.  More water-based displays,
etc. :P

And, here's another idea (not related to boats in particular).  I wonder if some
city parks might be up for having a fan-created Lego Miniland-type display
setup.  I think it would be great to see these sprouting up ("miniland is not
just at Legoland anymore").  Plus - no more worries about having layout space
(of course, I realize there would be a host of new issues to contend with).
Anyway, it is just a thought.

Go out and enjoy your boats!!!
