Any How-to for creating a LUG ?
Check out this page on LEGOFan.net:
http://www.legofan.net/Default.aspx?tabid=74
For the rest of the questions, I will answer with reference to
MichLUG.
We sometimes meet at members houses or in a common room of a church that one
michluger is a member.
Do you charge something ?
We dont have dues if thats what you mean. We sometimes charge an appearance
fee to setup a display, depending on the venue.
What are the usual/normal expense a LUG normally has ?
Website registration, flyer printing, tables, baseplates, etc.
What are the services you provide to users (t-shirts, containers, special
bricks, literatures, etc) ?
To our club members, we provide comaraderie. Members dont really get free
bricks, shirts or containers from the club. The club does provide its members
with a chance to buy shirts (when we make an order) and get together, talk about
lego, building techniques and display their creations in layouts.
Any suggestions for creating a name (rules, things to do, not to do) ?
The standard has been Name of City/State/Area + LUG (LEGO Users Group). A few
have deviated from this, most recently: Chicago
LEGO Builders.
Any suggestions for creating a logo (rules, things to do, not to do) ?
Its probably a bad idea to use the LEGO font, colors, or anything that would
possibly confuse the public as to wether your club was affilated with the LEGO
company. MichLUG ran a contest a while back to find a nice one. We ended up
giving away ~$50 in lego product to the winning design.
What are the activities you do when you meet ?
Talk, draft sets, show/compare creations.
I guess it varies, but how many U is there in a LUG (in a city of half a
million people)?
As you said, it varies. MichLUG, with members in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois,
Indiana, & Windsor, Canada has 27 members.
Any legal stuff to be concerned (Lego logo and names, Bricklink, Lugnet,
etc... names) ?
Dont have the word LEGO in your clubs url.
Do you bother creating a legal structure (president, secretary, etc...) ?
We did create those positions, however we are not a legal entity. The idea being
that those positions could more easily make certain types of decisions. (Such as
how to spend small amounts of club funds, large amounts are still run by the
club as a whole.)
How do you advertise your presence ?
Website, postings to lugnet (in the appropriate group), mailing list, physical
presence at shows.
What about landing an interview on the local TV station, what material
(image, movies, DVD from Brickfest, DVD from Brickfilms) could/should I use?
The few interviews that we have done, those opportunities have come to us,
through various events we have participated in. I would suggest against using
the DVDs from BrickFest and Brickfilms or images from other clubs.
What are the services available to a LUG (web hosting, from Lego, etc...) ?
LEGO does not provide services to clubs. Strickly speaking. As for hosting, Eric
Smith of NorthStar Computer Systems has
offered free hosting to clubs.
What do you recommend I do first if I want to create one LUG in my city
(Quebec City, Canada) ?
Try to arrange a meeting of like minded people by using your
local group on lugnet. Tim Courtney did
something similar here.
Feel free to add anything relevant, many thanks.
Also you could check out the other clubs in Canada, see if any members of those
clubs are near you.
