Any How-to for creating a LUG ?

We started by posting to the local groups that are part of the New England area.
Once a couple of people connected we met a couple of times and then decided to
form NELUG.

Where do you meet ?

Now we usually start at a Local LEGO retailer.  Then we move to one of a few
restaurants that we have a good relationship with where we can get a room (at no
charge) for ourselves.

Initially when it was just a couple folks we would meet at someones house.  Now
when we have about 15 people per meeting that isn't really feasable.

Do you charge something ?

Nothing.

What are the usual/normal expense a LUG normally has ?

It depends.  Initially we registered our URL.  We now have Tables, lots of LEGO,
Baseplates, and not least of all a Trailer.  Fortunately we have made enough
money doing events to cover all our expenses and still have quite a bit still in
our Bank account for future expenses.

What are the services you provide to users (t-shirts, containers, special
bricks, literatures, etc) ?

We do T-Shirts.  The club paid to have our LOGO digitized but members pay for
their own shirts.

Any suggestions for creating a name (rules, things to do, not to do) ?

Personally I like the LUG, LTC, And MUG standard.  Of course their are some that
just have to be different but I think one of those standards prefaced with
something descriptive works best.  If you want your group to have a specific
focus then go for a LTC or MUG type group.  If you just want to do anything LEGO
then go the LUG route.

The LUG route has worked really well for us but it also seems the lack of focus
has hurt some clubs.  We happen to be big enough that there is always a good
group of people into just about anything.  We do Trains, Brickwars, Special
Projects, etc. etc.

Any suggestions for creating a logo (rules, things to do, not to do) ?

We did something LEGOish but no real suggestions.  Just avoid anything that
might appear to infringe on LEGO Corporate LOGO's.

What are the activities you do when you meet ?

Talk, Talk, Talk.

Plus we do shows and occasionally build but 90% of the time we just gab, gab,
gab.

I guess it varies, but how many U is there in a LUG (in a city of half a
million people) ?

This really can vary.  I think 2 or 3 people could constitute a LUG in a small
area.  NELUG has about 100 members on our mailing list and about 15 members I
would consider core members.  Our meetings average about 15 but occasionally
there are more.

Any legal stuff to be concerned (Lego logo and names, Bricklink, Lugnet,
etc... names) ?

Don't use LEGO specifically.  As part of an accronym it isn't a problem.  Don't
use anything that resembles any LEGO symbols or Logo's.  I would suggest to be
as unique as possible in order to avoid problems.  Names like LUG, LTC, and MUG
are well used and not the intelectual property of anyone inparticular.

Do you bother creating a legal structure (president, secretary, etc...) ?

We don't.

How do you advertise your presence ?

We don't.

What about landing an interview on the local TV station, what material
(image, movies, DVD from Brickfest, DVD from Brickfilms) could/should I use ?

We don't do anything.  We don't care but they have found us several times
without us doing anything special other than having a Web Site.

What are the services available to a LUG (web hosting, from Lego, etc...) ?

Nothing in particular accept if you want a newsgroup here on LUGNET just ask in
admin.general and it will probably happen.  We pay for our hosting.

What do you recommend I do first if I want to create one LUG in my city
(Quebec City, Canada) ?

Post someting in http://news.lugnet.com/loc/ca/qc/que/ and cross post it to
.announce and .general with followups back to the group I gave the link to (The
Quebec City, Quebec group).

Feel free to add anything relevant, many thanks.

We are pretty free form.  Our only rule is you must be over 18 to join.
Otherwise as long as you have a love for the brick you are welcome.
