Glad to see you have a sense of humor, Stephen!  :-)

That post just felt a little too specifically aimed and I was not laughing.
:-|

Let me try this one more time and then I'll shut up for good.  I (and we)
have watched TLG go up and down in many different ways.  I've been here
since Lugnet began (member #114) so I don't consider myself to be "new."  I
started out posting to RTL like many of us did.  I've also been a Lego
builder and collector since 1976 so I feel that I have a right to complain
about things that I don't like in a product that I have adored for almost
three decades.  Apparently, a lot of other people feel the same way or you
wouldn't have to be 'next'ing through so many of their misgivings as well.
The fact that there are so many is indicative I believe of more than just
picky fans gathered together in one place.  We'd all like to have TLG do
what we want, but the bottom line is that it's totally out of our control,
and that's difficult to take when you feel that the decisions being made are
to the long-term detriment of your chosen hobby.  Granted, there've been
MANY occasions where some or all us felt that the sky was falling, but I
think that we as a community have weathered a lot of those changes rather
well.  For instance, BURPs (which everybody LOVED to hate when they first
appeared) became a challenge to use creatively, and ended up even being
embraced by the AFOL community.  These days though, I gotta say it really
feels like the pendulum has swung widely to the side of things I don't like
compared to what I do like to the point where I don't wanna buy anything
new, and that's never happened to me before.

I guess that I just don't feel that I can take the color change, click-hinge
conversion, poor set design, more pre-fab than bricks and plates, and
"action"-toy-instead-of-"building"-toy marketing approach all at the same
time!  They've gotta space these bitter pills out!!  This comment is gonna
sound older than dirt, but I feel like TLG has forgotten what made them
great, almost as if they're entering their own Dark Age.  Yeah, the Designer
sets are awesome, but that's about it for me.  EVERYTHING used to be
awesome.  There is so little new product coming out that excites me for any
or all of the previously listed reasons that now I'm really wondering what
they could do next to make the bulk of their product line less appealing.
It's kinda like watching Saturday Night Live or the new Star Wars movies.
They're not completely horrible, but they're no comparison to what came
before, and it's sad to watch something that you once thought was the best
continue to move forward mainly through inertia from past glories.  I've
love to lighten up, but I just don't see much to laugh about when it comes
to what I see as the slow but steady erosion of the best aspects of my
hobby.

I think what's bothering me most is that if TLG doesn't improve eventually,
then I won't have anything positive to say, and by extension, won't want to
fill up the ng's with crotchety rants about yesteryear.  I'll just stop
participating.  THAT will be what will really hurt me.  I feel a special
bond with this community because we have a shared passion that unites us in
a way that only other hobbyists can understand.  We have our own language
and many other things that make us unique.  I love that, I love being a part
of it, and I'd hate to leave because I wouldn't have anything positive to
contribute other than MOC's made out entirely out of "retired" colors.

Still, there is hope in all things.  SNL could hire new writers and actors
who are funny, George Lucas might let someone else (who can write and
direct) make more Star Wars movies, and whichever Kristiansen is currently
in charge might all of sudden look around and say: "Damn, we need stop
putting out this crap and start over!"

I just hope we don't have long to wait, and I hope that it doesn't have to
get worse before it gets better!

DinosaurDave

P.S:

"Pull the lever, Kronk!"  "WRONG LEVeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  *splash*

"I don't know why we even have that lever!"

or

"I hope that doesn't come back to haunt me!"

LOVE and own that movie!  :-D

Hey! I'm good with the sarcastic crap! I definitely do not think LEGO is
above criticism... Its mostly that its like a repeating thread.

"A llama!!! He's supposed to be dead!!!"
"Yea, go figure..."

I thought Stephen's post was humorous.  He's got a point: people need to
lighten
up.  I know of a lot of great builders who've gotten fed up with all the
complaining that goes on at Lugnet, so much so that they don't read or • post
often anymore.

Yea... These "Fan No More" posts come fairly regularly. Every year we get • a
new thread about it. I tend to ignore them since its mostly the same
comments as last time just with new set numbers and a new batch of people.

I'm not at all desiring to get involved in this flame-war. I want to ask a simple question to you about this post though. What is the click-hinge conversion you are talking about? I like those click-hinge parts and I use them when I need them, but (...) (20 years ago, 13-Jul-04, to lugnet.general)
