I think that the sorting method varies by both taste and collection size. I used
to sort specifically by shape without regard to color. Once my collection
reached about 50,000 pieces or so this method of sorting began to become more
trouble than it was worth. I have begun to sort by color, which in itself is
easier from a sortation standpoint, not necessarily from a part picking
standpoint. I then sort out the more commonly used parts from the different
colors using a classification system. Any plate that is larger than 2 x n goes
in a single drawer. 2 x n plates go into another drawer. etc.
The logic of this sortation method is that I can just grab the specific color
bins or drawers based on the project I am working on. I don't have to have the
whole collection at my fingertips when building.
