Sort what you need, leave the rest out.
I have individual boxes for sorting bricks, plates and slopes in the
basic colours. For some color/shape combinations I even splitted boxes,
like in "Red slopes 45" and "Red Slopes other", or "Black plates small"
and "Black plates large". For the basic shapes in the remaining odd
colours I have a set of Boxes labaled "Bricks", "Plates" and "Slopes".
Other items are roughtly sorted by themes, maybe subsorted by type or
colour ("Technic Pins", "Technic Beams", "Technic Gears").
I have one or two "Handy boxes" for stuff I'll need around the current
project, and I have several (unsorted) junk boxes, e.g. one for "Car
Junk" like Windscreen, wheels, car baseplates, car doors etc, which I
regularly dump off at my nephews. Likewise, there is "Space Junk" and
"Train Junk", and "JackStone/Fabuland/Kiddi Stuff". Duplo ends up in my
daughters boxes (although I have to admit that I raided one of her Duplo
boxes for building supports ;-).
Of course, there is always a box around for unsorted stuff (Whether I
broke down a model, or finished a certain part of a MOC, I drop the
parts in this bin to sort them later, or if I spot a piece in a box
where it does not belong, I don't dig out the right box immediately, but
just drop it into the unsorted bin)
A take-it-easy-approach is definitely the way to go with sorting. An
attempt to sort really everything is bound either to fail or to drive
the sorter mad.
Yours, Christian

| Help!! What on Earth was I thinking? A few weeks ago I looked around at all the various tubs, cans, boxes, and other containers I have lying about, filled with various LEGO elements, so I thought I would be smart (HA!) and inventory it...y'know, get (...)
