Actually, I got the number of threads just by counting the number of thread
lines in my nntp client's "thread view". I'm assuming that Netscape
Collabra defines the start of a thread as either a message which has no
References: header, or a message that has a References: header for a
different newsgroup.
Migrations out of a group, hmmm... I didn't take that into consideration
(and I wouldn't care to do the homework right now :-) but I would venture to
say that these would start new threads, depending upon your point of view.

I'm playing with the idea of putting together a kind of analysis tool, using
the News::NNTPClient Perl module, which would tally this kind of info.
I'm actually wondering about several statistics, like deepest thread (by
message count :-), widest thread, skinniest thread (not sure how to define
that one), largest thread by kb, largest thread by message count, most
prolific poster, starting-most-threads poster, ending-most-threads poster,
etc. With Names Attached. You know, really nasty stuff for gossiping
purposes. :-,
But writing such a tool would require time, which I am in dire need of now.
One of those back-burner projects, I guess. I'll put it with the DAT2VRML
filter I'm also planning (2), and fixing my garbage disposal which I have
put off for too long (3).
Cheers,

1. To quote Obi-Wan :-P
2. Which should be relatively easy, using the modules Math::MatrixReal and
VRML. IMHO it would be tres cool serving VRML-ized DAT files from LUGNET,
for those who don't want to bother viewing plain ol' DAT files...
3. Do not, reapeat, do *NOT* try to crush gravel in yours. Nor should you
allow punky nephews to try the same without a baseball bat within your
reach.
