David, I have no idea how to guess with any accuracy, but I agree, 500,000
is probably way over the mark. One metric I would ask for is: how many full
blue tubs worth of LEGO do you think you have? It looks like the picture
might fill up 40 or 50, but I can't tell how full the drawers are. Supposing
you have 50 full tubs worth, including the 25% not in the picture. Further,
suppose that the average piece size you own is a 1x3 brick. Then I'd guess
you have 150,000 pieces.
Where in the world did that come from? Well, a blue tub is a limit more than
half-full at 1200 pieces. And, I counted once and determined that a blue tub
holds 1500 loose 2x4 bricks. So I guesstimated everything from there.
If you do sit down and count some day, please let everyone know!
