The difference is LucasFilm don't sell models or toys themselve. They just
licence their design to Hasbro and LEGO. Bandai owns Gundam and sell their own
toys and models.

Actually most serious model makers modify their Gundam models. It take a lot
of modeling skill but if you enter any unmodified model into competitions you
will never win. What Bandai have done with their model they made them very
easy to build for beginners. Bandai basically covered all age groups with
their toy lines and models.
I would love to see it happens, but given the high violence content in Gundam
shows, and some high number of nude scenes in some of them like Turn-A, I
really doubt LEGO would touch it in the next ten years.
