(LOL) Yes, Kev, you do make spiffy buildings -- but hopefully that won't
stop TLG from making new ones (they have the advantage of being able to
include new pieces with their sets ;) Hmm... I also remember trying to build
planes out of Meccano, but never managed anything recognizable.
But seriously, as Kevin said... depends on what you're interested in. If you
don't care about World War I combat aircraft, then you may well not be
interested in the new kit. It is one of the more famous aircraft in history,
however (I am expecting to see a Red Fokker Dr.1 Triplane next). Peanuts
fans will also remember the Sopwith Camel as Snoopy's aircraft when facing
down the Red Baron.
As for what I'd build if I were a model designer? I like the WWI aircraft,
but I still prefer modern ones, so I'd want to see an A-10 Thunderbolt II
'Warthog', an F-14 Tomcat, a YF-23 Black Widow or F-22 Raptor, a Panavia
Tornado, a Saab Drakken and Viggen (the aircraft, not the car), maybe F-18,
F-16 and an F-15 (no, wait, I've already done that one twice, so they don't
need to, right Kevin? ;). WWII ones like the P-51 Mustang, the Messerschmitt
Bf-109, the B-17 Flying Fortress and the Supermarine Spitfire would all be
cool too.
And that's just aircraft; I'd also love to see them do Supercars Model Team
style (like Bram does) -- Ferrari F-40, Testarossa, Laborghini Countach,
Diablo, BMW Z3, even an Acura NSX.
I'd also see them acquire the license for various Hasbro licenses (say 'The
Transformers', G.I.Joe, Star Blazers), or various Sci Fi licenses (Babylon
5, Buck Rogers (Gil Gerrard / Erin Gray series ships), Macross/Robotech,
Battlestar Galactica (chrome Cylons?)) so we could get official minifig
kits, as we are enjoying with the Star Wars license right now.
Am I ever going to see all of these things from TLG? No, of course not...
that's why they encourage you to create models yourself... what do you want
to build?
But seeing the odd Model Team set of something I really wanted to create but
never got around to it for one reason or another (not enough time, not
enough pieces) is great. That's why I got both UCS sets, and why I want the
Sopwith Camel.
