On the other hand nobody would care about buildings like these, if you could
get each wanted part on demand from S@H easily. I'm of the opinion TLC should
never throw some bricks more or less cheap into the market. For e.g. I wouln'd
like to see classic windows in the seizes 3x2(blue), 2x2 (black + grey) or 1x2
(black+yellow). It might be ok if new released sets in the 100$ range contain a
pair of them though. But if TLC would decide to produce for e.g. the 22° sloped
corner brick in 3x3x1 (only available in 7740) and sell them chep in some
creator-set, I would not be glad about it at all.

This is a conflict between collectors (who want rare bricks) and builders (who
want to have all stuff available in all colours). I'm both builder and
collector, but as a builder I can live quite well with some rarer bricks, as a
collector I never could simply accept a all-bricks-on-demand-concept.

Well I too am a builder and a collector.  I have gotten a lot of rare parts, mostly
from Germany.  I am now purchasing 4 of the 1x4x5 yellow windows, only ever
available in a 1982 Town House set (2 per set).  I am paying DM20,-  (about $10)
for each window.  I can certainly understand the feeling of collectors who will
have the value of what they already own drop in value if they produced them in bulk
sales.  But on the other hand I want more of these windows (I will have 13, and
that is not enough!).  So I can see both sides of the picture.

What really bothers me however, is that I can never visit one of the LEGOLAND
parks.  The reason is I will become quite upset when I see what the Model Builders
CAN have available to build with, and I CANNOT!  This "envy" has been mentioned by
many who have gone to a LEGOLAND park.

Also, I think that the current rarity of certain parts, may make a Lego employee
"black market".  A few years ago I purchased 18 of the very very rare 3x3x1 low
sloped corner bricks in yellow that you talked about only being available in the
7740 Intercity Train (4 per set).  The person I purchased them from turned out to
be an ex-Lego employee.  The 2 rare 1x2x2 black windows that I own I purchased when
I visited a  toy store in Coburg Germany.  There the train "Erzatzteile" (spare
parts) wooden box had them sitting there for many years along with one 1x1x2 black
window. I purchased all 3 for less than 2 Marks.  In the USA, you would never be
able to buy individual parts like this.  They were never sold individually.  Also,
Germany and much of Europe had more spare parts items available than the USA ever
had.

(...) The comment that really irks me from page 43 of 'THE ULTIMATE LEGO BOOK', "Every model is built using LEGO elements that are available in the shops (no cheating is allowed)." I guess they don't mention colours though. pete.w (23 years ago, 25-Apr-01, to lugnet.general)
