Hello all,

Re: Model Team/Technic
Love (and frequently buy) both of them.

Re: old set re-releases
No, I don't like the newer sets as much as I like the older sets.  But there
are many things for which I prefer older to newer, not just Lego.  For example,
a 63 Corvette is much nicer than a '90s Corvette, in my opinion.  But does this
mean that Chevrolet should keep cranking out old cars?  I don't think so.  Not
only that, but I have to believe that it would lose much of its appeal if they
did keep producing it. Needless to say I am against the re-release of older
Lego sets.  This is not to say of course that Lego can't perhaps pick up the
level of design a notch or two.

Re: Acknowledgement from TLG
Any improvement welcome!  I consider Jeroen's time and effort here lately to be
such.

Re: peoples attitudes here
Having only been following lugnet for a few months now, I hate to make enemies
so soon... but I just have to comment. It is striking how bitter the tone is
from the majority of people here (or is it perhaps that the contented people
are not posting?).  Is anyone out there happy?  How about some perspective.
Are you employed?  Healthy?  Hopefully yes.

Lego is just a toy.  We all seem a little too serious to me.  Calling kids
"Nintendo punks", and brats, and dumb, all seems cynical, extreme and generally
ridiculous to me.  Such a blanket statement!  If my memory serves me correctly,
kids didn't have stainless-steel attention spans in the '70s either.  I seem to
remember that after playing for an hour or two with Lego, I would promptly set
it aside and go on to something else.  Whether it is Nintendo or street hockey
or whatever isn't the point (and I SURE don't want to argue which of those is
better).  I might get back to the Lego in a couple hours, or a couple weeks.
It didn't matter to me then: I WAS A KID.  If the mood hit me, I played with my
Lego.  If not, I didn't.  I think we as adults have incorporated into our Lego
"hobby" a degree of obsession that's just not there with kids, as it shouldn't
be.  As a kid, it's another toy.  Yes, yes, yes - markedly better than the
average toy, granted.  But the '90s (and soon-to-be '00s) are not the '70s, or
even '80s. The reality for Lego is more and different competition for toy
sales; indeed their essence is that of a company selling to kids.  Perhaps
there are a large number of AFOLs, but it seems that we've over-inflated our
proportion, compared to what I suspect it is in reality.

In short, I think the TLG investigation here is a positive thing.  What will
come of it?  Who knows.  But I think we should show a little more appreciation
and respect towards, at the very least, Jeroen - who in even broaching the
subject here has taken on a large task.  Some of the responses that he has
received suggest that maybe a stroll outside through the park is in order for
some of us.

Happy with the Lego that I have,
and optimistic that there will be More Good Lego to come,
and hopefully not banished from the group,  =)
Jim

(...) I think you might be mistaking 'bitterness' for a pent up desire for many people here to express their feelings to Lego, and someone just opened a crack in the door. Do you expect us to sit here on our hands and not say anything that might be (...) (26 years ago, 19-Feb-99, to lugnet.general)
