Did someone say Cellulose Acetate????

The red and yellow are easiest to spot.  The red has an orange hue to it.  The yellow is
a "Lemon Chiffon" shade that is lighter in color.  Blue is also a bit lighter.  But the
other colors are hard to tell the difference.  Here is a surefire way to tell if they
are CA.  Just stack a bunch of 2x4 bricks together.  If there are gaps between them (or
if they wobble), then it is CA.  CA has a tendancy to warp over the years (the waffle
bottom white plates seem to be the exception).  Sloped bricks (only red or blue) made of
CA also show excess warpage.  And ditto for windows.  They start to sag in the middle.

The books on LEGO state that ABS came out in 1962 or thereabouts.  But I just won on
EBAY a set of 3 LEGO trucks from 1968 (#310), a Samsonite set.  I won it for a German
collector friend.  It arrived yesterday, and I was shocked when I saw that all the
yellow pieces in the set were CA, while the red and blue pieces were ABS!!!  This is
from 1968!!   The pieces were original, because some of the yellow plates were unique to
this set.  And here was another shocker, the 1x6 yellow beams were of the old type (no
posts underneath), while the 1x2 and 1x4 yellow bricks were of the newer type (with
posts).  Yet they were all CA!!!  I was astonished.  The red and blue beams of all 3
sizes matched the yellow, but they were all ABS!

So this explains why there is so much CA to be found in the USA.  Samsonite must have
had a big warehouse full of the CA pellets (especially in yellow), when TLC (Europe)
made the switch to ABS back in the early 60's.  CA was used by Samsonite until almost
1970!!

Yup, these sound like CA bricks, is the logo on the top of the studs a "script" type
font also much smaller than the normal logo of today? and the logo's seem to go all
directions? Most of mine are like that. Good find for some people :) and I'm sure
Gary would love those windows!

I picked up a bag of Lego bricks at a thrift store today. I think they may be CA
bricks. Can someone confirm the signs ?

o All the bricks are red or white.
o The 1x2's have no post.
o The red bricks seem a little off in color (lighter, possibly orange or yellow)
o The are two 4 x 8 plates with an unusual square grid pattern on the bottom.
o I can see two kinds of warpage, inward along the sides of 2x4's and vertical
across the bottom.
o Many of the 2x4's say 'Pat Pend' under the bottom.
o There are only a few 1x1's, two of the white ones have letters stamped in the
side 'W' and 'D' (blue ink).
o There is a reduced holding ability between studs and the bottom of the other
bricks.
o This bag had only 2 bricks larger than 2x4: a red 2x8 and a white 2x10.
o There are 5 windows (all in red and with glass): 1x6x3(1), 1x4x2(1), 1x6x2 3-
panes(2), and a 1x2x3(1) which may be a door.
o All have an unusal stylised Lego logo on the studs.

I think I got maybe 100-150 pcs in the bag.
