  When did "seeding" begin?

I'm referring to TLG's recent penchant for inserting basic brick colors into their sets that are not part of the color scheme of the set. Though I love green plates, what the hell are they doing in the MTT? Besides that, what's with the tan? I like (...) (24 years ago, 1-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

  Re: When did "seeding" begin?

From my knowledge, it's a recent occurance. I can't think of any sets that came out more than 2 years ago that have this problem. Many of my sets from more than 2 years ago seem to be exempt. UFO and Exploriens come to mind as 'safe' sets to work (...) (24 years ago, 1-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

(...) came (...) than (...) to (...) as (...) sets (...) I'm not sure it's a recent thing, actually. Model team sets have had bricks buried in the middle of models that were not the expected color... both 5561 and 5571 have blue bricks buried in (...) (24 years ago, 1-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

  Re: When did "seeding" begin?

(...) I have a guess: Lego think its easier to follow the building instructions if they put a brick in another color as a sort of reference point... -Anders (24 years ago, 1-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

  Re: When did "seeding" begin?

(...) I think it might be more to do with the counting machines, than the molding/colour use. It's easier to pick up a mistake of 2 blue/4 black than 6 black of a piece in the same bag, as well, I know there are physical limits as to how many of (...) (24 years ago, 1-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

(...) Or maybe they want the kids to have different colored bricks for them to use when they take apart the set (of course I already have enough red >:o). -- Andrew, Agent 0007 (24 years ago, 1-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

  Re: When did "seeding" begin?

(...) A simpler (more cynical?) answer, is that the filler bricks are just cheaper to make, and Lego is driving as much cost out of each set as they possibly can. I've not seen filler bricks in anything other than red, yellow, or blue. I was quite (...) (24 years ago, 2-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

Well, the Exploriens Starship had two 2*2 red basic bricks hidden inside it's landing gears. --Tobias (...) (24 years ago, 2-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

(...) I don't mind if the elements in question are hidden inside a model (the 2x8 blue brick inside the A-Wing comes to mind as an example) - in fact, sometimes I find those tidbits useful; however, where this practice has gone too far is the MTT - (...)   Re: When did "seeding" begin?

(...) Most of the error checking was done by weight, and, without any inside knowledge, I would presume that the baggies and sets are still checked by weight. The PVC trays were checked by a video camera, which was kinda cool. If you left out a (...) (24 years ago, 3-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

  Re: When did "seeding" begin?

(...) IMO the main reason is as a reference point for building, with a fringe benefit that it makes the overall package (polypaks) more colorful. When you've got a bunch of black plates interlocking all over the core of a 5571, a hidden blue brick (...) (24 years ago, 5-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)
