I assume that the headlight parts on the 8880 are screened because they
are 2x4 "top" slopes, and hence has a rugged surface, unsuitable for
putting decals on. The same goes for the 8422, or rather, they are
screened because the headlights aren't flat, and thus they are unsuited
for a sticker.
That's my theory, anyway.
