Hi,
Does anyone know how long a box 4 inches high by 12-16 inches square
should take to travel the Atlantic? It was sent on the 5th of September,
and the sender and I think it must have got lost on the way.. but I
thought I'd ask here to see if anyone with more experience was more
familiar with that sort of shipment and how long it should take!

It all depends on how much the item weighted and what service was used to send
it.  Letter Packet and Small Packers sent airmail should get there in about a
week.  On the other hand, if send via surface, it could take two months or
more.  If the item was sent registered, it could be traced.  If only insured,
there is no record kept of the delivery progress.

If the package was sent via surface parcel post, it might yet still be in
transit.  You can start inquiries with the Postal Service, but the results can
take a long time.  Anywhere from three months to a year.  (I've still got an
outstanding inquiry from October 1997.)
