I have a number of pieces of what I can only describe as 'miniature' lego.

It has the lego logo but is half the size (1/2 the width and 1/2 the height)
of regular lego system bricks. It consists of 1 stud wide beams and 1 stud
wide plates of various stud lengths.

Where did this come from?

Sounds like 'Modulex' bricks.  Lego made them in the 1960's for use by
architects to build buildings.  They're about 60% (best guess) the size of
standard Lego bricks.  I've got maybe a dozen or so in different colors -
including several colors that aren't available in Lego or Duplo!  (Maybe
someday?  I hope so!)

Some of the studs might have "L" on them - there isn't enough room for "LEGO"!

Modulex came out in 1963, same year as LEGO small plates (1x1, 1x2, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4
only).  Was there a correlation?  Was the short lived Architectural LEGO line,
also introducend in 1963 via sets #750, 751, 752, and hard plastic box parts packs
plates sets (with the 8x11 gray baseplate) #518, 519, 520, 521, somehow tied into
the Modulex introduction as well?   The Architectural sets consisted almost
exclusively of plates, and were only produced from 1963-65.  Perhaps the
Architectural LEGO sets were produced for young architectural students as a
prelude for using Modulex later?

This mystery is best solved by someone from TLC Europe.
