In Norway, we always open the presents after the Christmas dinner on the
24th of December, typically around 18-20.  (That's 6-8pm.)  We normally
have to wait until the dishes are done, too, but I have a feeling that
this is done to have the kids join in to wash up!

I'm not totally sure, of course, but I would think that this applies to
Denmark as well.

In Denmark the general habit (among the ~99% of the
population that are protestants) is to open the presents
after dinner Christmas eve.

I have never encountered a Danish family that opens
Christmas presents at another time.

Play well,

Jacob

It is the same custom in Germany.  And it doesn't matter if you are Catholic
or Protestant (Lutheran).  My father's family is Catholic, my mother's family
is Lutheran.  The customs are the same in both sides.  This custom has
continued since moving to the USA 40 years ago.  The great thing about being a
child in the USA with German relatives is that you get to open presents on
Christmas Eve, and again on Christmas morning (celebrating both German and
American customs).

Yep, my parents are German Protestant stock, so we open presents (except for the big "Santa" presents) on Xmas Eve, but my wife's family opens them on Xmas day. We compromised - we open my family's presents on Xmas Eve, and her's on Xmas day ;-) (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-00, to lugnet.general)
