I would say any MOC could be considered a work of art.  It is the "artist" who
puts the pieces in a certain arrangement, creating a new piece out of other
smaller pieces.

Theoretically, if I copy a work of art, even if I get it exactly right,
it's a forgery... If Lego Bricks are the medium, is that still true? Is
it art because the artist says so?

True a person's reproduction would be a forgery, but unless someone that is
actually a famous artist hand crafted the piece, and you could verify this
fact, would you really care that you owned a forgery instead of someone else's
MOC?  If it is for your own use, I see no problem copying it.  If you were to
sell it as your own, or tell people you designed it, then that would be wrong.

This whole thing has just been discussed at length in .debate but I
don't think any satisfactory conclusion has been reached.
