my puppet team and I have had some dialogue about having a Lego Night.

You shouldn't talk to your puppets.. _they're_not_real_  ;-)

That depends on if you get your "real" theology from the Velveteen Rabbit or
from Toy Story.  Cuz if you're going Velveteen (not Velveeta, please) then
they've got some years left.

Minifigs, now they have feelings.. and they assure me that out of all my toys
they are the only ones that are sentient. And that all the rest aren't plotting
to lock me in my room and make me play with them after years of neglect. They
understand that I'm too busy - that's why I like LEGO - see? It's the
understanding toy.
*delusional nervous laugh*

Good questions I need to think about.  I suppose I oughta go task-based this
time.  My original idea was to build a community town, but as you say, that'd
be alot of bricks.  Maybe go "Vehicle" would be a good way to go.

A town may be fun.. if you had a dozen or so baseplates, and a baseplate for
each group? Although there probably is a limit to how many kids can play
happily on one baseplate at a time!

I honestly couldn't buy a bunch of MegaBlocks.  I have my own set (once again
you remind me of my jaded past) and they just don't stick.  I understand that
they're better than they used to be, but I have my standards.

I've never bought Mega-Blocks, although some of their castle sets and the
cheap-o 5000 brick pack have made me stop and think for a while :)

One thing I
considered was sending a bulletin through my church to receive Lego donations
from raided basements and attics, or even donate new ones.  My church is
pretty good "giving" church.

Yeah, it's good to have a resource like that to use if you need.

I don't think that you're the first person who's talked about wanting to do a
local event, maybe it would be possible to start up a LUGNET community
jambalaya-type collection that could be sent around from event to event -
you'd have to look into the postage rates (it would be quite heavy)..but if
it cost say $20-$50 (1) to post it per event.. then that would be a fair
price?

That's a brilliant idea but I don't know how to start something like that.
Time is on my side, however, in that I control the events and I could wait for
a Buildathon 6 months from now.

Figure out how much you need, how much it will weigh, how much postage costs -
(eg. from the usps site it's $34 for a 50 pound package from California to New
York), set up a web-page with the info (either on the webweb, or if it's the
sorta thing that fits in well with LUGNET, then the
members-being-able-to-edit-pages on LUGNET idea would be handy!), um.. and then
announce it, asking for people who want to sign up for the box, and for
volunteers to donate LEGO to the project.

I'd be happy to help with the web-part if needed!

Chances are that most people who signed up for the box would donate some LEGO
to the project, and I know there are plenty of generous people on LUGNET who
would donate LEGO anyway. And maybe LEGO would donate some LEGO :)

Thinks . o O ( It could be a pretty good way to promote their product.. )

I come from the country that it came from, but I have no clue as to impirical
measurement - is 50 pounds of LEGO a LOT, or not a lot? We probably need some
better guesses as to how much LEGO is needed, and then figure if it's feasible
to post it?

(...) What do you think of this? I could have specialty tables for the town 1) "Building" Tables with baseplates and lots of bricks, windows and doors 2) "Vehicle" Tables which specialize in accessories like wheels, windshields, and wings 3) "Zoo" (...)
