BTW, this is a resource in need of a volunteer to update its data. Old-timers
may remember that this went online in January of 1997(!)
The data file it works from goes like this: There's a "format" specification
saying various ways that words can be combined -- for example az, ayz, bz,
byz, abz, abyz, etc. The meanings of a, b, c, y, and z are defined later.
Here are the 10 format specifications:
format 4 az
format 1 ayz
format 8 bz
format 2 byz
format 4 abz
format 1 abyz
format 4 acz
format 1 acyz
format 8 bcz
format 2 bcyz
Basically, if I remember correctly, a, b, and c represent things like adverbs
and adjectives, and y and z represent nouns. The numbers like 4, 1, 8, and 2
in the middle column above represent the relative frequencies of generation.
In other words, for example, az should occur four times for every ayz.
Then, following the format block, there's a huge list of what a, b, c, etc.
are defined as, with one word per line, like this:
a to Deep-Reef
z to Refuge
a to Sting-Ray
z to Explorer
b to Sea
z to Hunter
b to Scuba
z to Squad
b to Treasure
z to Hunters
a to Shark
b to Cage
z to Cove
a to Diving
b to Expedition
z to Attack
a to Outback
b to Mountain
a to Amazon
a to Crisis
b to News
z to Crossing
z to Rescue
z to Airstrip
z to Chief
z to Engine
b to Roadblock
z to Brigade
The word "to" above is just a theme designator -- in this case Town.
Similarly, Space is "sp" and Castle is "cs" -- but those are just details.
If someone is willing to take a crack at bringing the word list up-to-date,
or is willing to coordinate a group effort, please let me know and I can
supply you with the data file. E-mail me at <todd@lugnet.com>. Thanks!
